Varas, a visual artist and educator from Ecuador, began his artistic journey during childhood, exhibiting his work at Casa de la Cultura in Guayaquil for three consecutive years under the tutelage of Yolanda Valverde. Inspired by Ecuadorian abstract expressionist artist Mariela Garcia during summer nights in Salinas, he observed her process closely, learning the importance of trusting one's intuition and fully embracing the unknown. This exposure significantly shaped his artistic development and is a philosophy ingrained in his own work. After graduating from the New England School of Art & Design at Suffolk University in Boston, Varas built a career that has spanned multiple fields. He started designing and illustrating for Harvard Medical Bookstore, creating plates of the human anatomy inspired by the works of Jean Baptiste Marc Bourgery and Nicolas Henry Jacob. He is also the founder of Editions Art Tendance, a studio that creates art posters blending fine art techniques from the late 1800s with modern design. These designs have achieved international acclaim and have been sold in stores worldwide, including major retailers like Macy's.
Varas's artistic vision extends into textile design, where he collaborated with Yarnell Fabrics and Caravel Samsung under the direction of art director Caroline Whiler in Los Angeles. His contributions to fabric collections blend traditional artistry with modern technology, enhancing both aesthetic appeal and functionality.
In Hollywood, Varas has made significant contributions as a scenic artist and designer, bringing environments to life in productions like "Richie Rich" and "Casper." He has also created personalized portraits for notable celebrities, including Macaulay Culkin, and designed murals for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Calabasas estate. His work in music productions, including projects with Matchbox 20, further solidifies his reputation within the entertainment industry. Varas's paintings have even been featured in the television series "Felicity," showcasing his versatility across various mediums.
Notably, Varas has excelled in high-end residential design, contributing to custom projects like a home theater for NASCAR executives. His ability to meet both aesthetic and functional requirements has attracted high-profile clients, including Ange Santini, the former President of the Executive Council of Corsica.
In the rock music scene, Varas has created striking artworks that resonate with the energy of rock and roll, collaborating with iconic bands like the Rolling Stones and providing artwork for legends like Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Alongside rock stylist Maryam Malakpour, Varas blends art and fashion to create unforgettable experiences during world tours.
Varas's international presence includes exhibitions in Madrid, showcasing the cultural exchange between Latin American and European art. His exhibitions often explore themes of identity, culture, and abstraction, contributing to contemporary art discussions. He has also showcased his work in León, Guanajuato, Mexico, and at the cultural center of the Mexican Embassy in Washington, D.C.
His notable contributions to public art include permanent outdoor murals in Beverly Hills, Hollywood, and North Hollywood. As an artist-in-residence at the Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology in 2016, Varas engaged students in large-scale abstract drawing projects and exhibited his own work. His collaboration with Seymour Knox IV at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo reflects a commitment to support and enrich the arts community.
Passionate about arts education, Patricio Varas is dedicated to inspiring young artists and fostering creativity within communities through his multifaceted artistic endeavors.
